How it Works

With a solar energy system, you not only produce your own energy, you feed the excess into your power utility’s grid for others to use and are credited for the “donation”. Thus, you create not only environmental savings but financial savings as well.

Breaking it down

There are four key pieces to an energy-saving solar system:

  • Solar Modules:  The modules mounted on your home or business facility collect the sun’s energy and transform it into direct current (DC).
  • Inverter:  The DC flows into an inverter that converts it to an alternating current (AC), power that’s the same as is sent to you by the utility.
  • Electrical Panel (Breaker Box):  Power flows from the inverter into your electrical service panel fro where it supplies power to your home or office.
  • Utility Grid:  If you produce more energy than you consume it is automatically re-routed to your utility’s grid and sold to them at the current retail rate.

What is Net Metering?

Solar electric generation and purchases from the electric utility are “netted out” automatically. This can slow down the utility’s meter or even spin it backwards if the solar system is producing more electricity than is being consumed. Your excess electricity is then sold back to the utility at the retail rate, per agreement with the utility company.

New York State utilities will permit most customers with fewer than 25 kilowatts of PV to net meter.

Upfront Rebates and Tax Incentives can total up to 70% off system costs.
